MINIATURE DONKEYS
Miniature donkeys (also referred to as Miniature Mediterranean donkeys or Sicilian donkeys) originally came from the Mediterranean islands of Sicily and Sardinia. A few people imported and began breeding them, one of these being Danby Farms in Nebraska, who also started a registry for miniature donkeys in 1958. Today the American Donkey and Mule Society maintains the miniature donkey registry. Mature donkeys cannot exceed a height of 36" at the withers to be classified as miniature. Gray-dun or slate (mouse gray with a black or brown dorsal stripe and stripe running the length of the back) is the most common color, but miniature donkeys can also be found in spotted, brown, black, white, sorrel and roan color variations. Miniature donkeys are very healthy animals and require routine worming, hoof trimming and vaccinations that would be given to horses. When handled daily from birth for several weeks they become very affectionate animals and will seek attention from their owners. It is comical to walk out into the donkey pasture and watch the ones who want all of the attention lay their ears back threatening the others who want their turn at being petted. In the past donkeys have been portrayed as stupid, stubborn animals and this couldn't be further from the truth. Years ago when my husband was doing morning chores he noticed one jennet that stayed back from the others, braying at him. He did not see her foal beside her and knew something had happened to it. As he walked towards this jennet she started walking away. If he followed her she kept going, but if he veered another direction she would stop and wait for him. She led him to a hole that her foal had stumbled into and could not get out of by itself. Miniature donkeys are cautious and will not just blindly walk into something they are not sure of. We have seen miniature donkeys that have never walked on cement be very hesitant to step on it. If they are left alone to explore new things on their own, they soon loose their fear of it. They are herd animals and do not like to be alone. Donkeys that grow up together form a bond and will be companions even within the herd. They get along well with many species of small animals such as goats, sheep, llamas, alpacas and miniature horses. The exception can be a breeding jack who when mature may show aggression to other animals. Though they are small they are very powerful for their size. Miniature donkeys can be used for riding (for small children), driving, and make wonderful pets. There also are numerous shows around the country where donkeys can compete in conformation and performance classes. They are extremely easy keepers and will become overweight when adults if given too much feed. A result of this is a crest (fat roll) which will develop on their neck and remain there for the rest of their lives. All baby animals are cute but some people feel that a miniature donkey foal is one of the cutest. Good conformation and disposition are the most important goals when breeding miniature donkeys. As with all miniature animals those that mature smaller are in great demand and are more valuable. There have been miniature donkeys that matured as small as 25" in height. Less common colors are also very desirable. Our breeding herd consists of donkeys of all colors ranging in height from 29 3/4" to 36".

Shadow has an outstanding disposition. Visitors to our farm are surprised when I tell them that this donkey that was the first one to greet them when they came into the pasture and is leaning on them wanting attention is our breeding jack. We can leave him in the pasture with jennets that are foaling and he will not bother the jennets or their foals. He is a perfect gentleman with the jennets at breeding time as well.
